Description
Maria Taylor's fourth solo album marks her first foray into handling all production duties herself, having worked primarily with fellow Saddle Creek staples Andy LeMaster and Mike Mogis on her previous records and she hasn't played it too safe. Gone are the acoustic trappings of 2009's LadyLuck (mostly, anyway), and in comes a bit of rock swagger and rawer aesthetic that Maria says is an attempt to reflect the music scene in her Alabama home state.
"I only know how to write songs the same way I've always written them. So I feel like every record is just a reflection of where I am in my life, and that's pretty much how they differ. Then I try with each record to do something a little different production-wise," she says. The nine songs on Overlook were written after a protracted period of writer's block that, once broken, resulted in a two-week flurry of writing and demo-ing activity. Local friend Lester Nuby III engineered the record, and Maria's brother, sister and father all chipped in with backing vocals and an assortment of instruments.
