Product Notes

The diversity of the tunes on Hurricane Unleashed is fitting when you look at his career which spans 45 years, starting as a doowop singer, moving into jazz, latin jazz, big bands, and evolving into an unrestrained deep dive into the blues. His contribution to this genre was validated in 2013 when he was inducted as one of the Living Legends of Los Angeles by the Jazzabration Foundation. According to the Hurricane, everything is rooted in the blues - the earthiness and realities of life. Even when you aren't playing blue notes, even when you aren't playing 1, 4, 5 chords, even when you aren't playing 12 bars, when you are playing truth, you are playing the blues. Starting with the strong groovy beat of "Gotta Get Back to Chicago", he moves us through songs like the tongue-in-cheek "Camarillo" and then blows us away with his masterful unexpected upbeat execution of "Mr. Magic." The rocking strains of "Little Mama" are bound to get you on your feet dancing while "You Make Me Crazy" and "Lovers Hill" speak to us all about our longings for love. And then you have the extra added bonus of the most popular tracks from his previous album," I Got The Blues!" Unleash yourself and surrender to the groove! Vocalist, saxophonist and songwriter/arranger, bluesman Bobby Hurricane Spencer has a musical past that has spanned over 45 years. Spencer considers Oakland his hometown where he cut his teeth in the Chitlin' Circuit of the Bay Area including San Francisco, Russell City, Richmond, Alameda, and others. This included playing in such legendary clubs as Al's House of Smiles, the Showcase, the Sportsman, Ester's Orbit Room and the Continental Club. Later came the Shalamar and Troyce Key's famous Eli's Mile High Club. If you were lucky enough to have heard the soul pumping from these clubs then you know the Hurricane, because he was anchored dead center in the horn section of bands such as Johnny Tolbert and De Thangs and Marvin Holmes and the Uptights -- playing behind such legends as Etta James, the Whispers, Carla Thomas, Lowell Fulsom, and ZZ Hill and opening for musicians like Bobby Blue Bland, Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, and Smokey Robinson. Spencer played with Rodger Collins at the first Rock Festival ever (according to Rolling Stone Magazine) at Mount Tamalpais. His trademark sound can be found on records by Timex Social Club, Sonny Rhodes, JJ Bad Boy Jones, Jimmy McCracklin, just to name a few. As a session player in Oakland, he recorded for Fantasy Records' Ray Shanklin with Little Johnny Taylor, Roger Collins and more. His original music appears on the Grammy nominated Force of Nature album by Koko Taylor. Most recently in the Fall of 2013 he was inducted into the Living Legends Foundation which includes such legendary musicians as Les McCann, Phil Upchurch, Brenda Lee Eager, HB Barnum, and Al Williams.
