Caribbean jazz with FIRE ! Canefire is a high-energy Caribbean music experience that combines Trinidadian calypso with Latin rhythms, jazz, and blues to create a unique, exciting sound. At the heart of this sound is it's unconventional use of the steelpan - the Trinidadian percussion instrument that transforms oil barrels into sound vessels. Canadian pianist Jeremy Ledbetter, musical director and arranger for Trinidadian calypso legend David Rudder, put Canefire together in 2005 to perform the Caribbean-rooted music inspired by his world travels. A talented group of young musicians from diverse backgrounds, Canefire has won international acclaim as one of the most exciting Caribbean jazz ensembles around. Canefire is: Jeremy Ledbetter -- Piano Mark Mosca -- Steelpan Alexis Baró -- trumpet Braxton Hicks -- saxophones Yoser Rodriguez -- bass Chendy León -- drums Alberto Suárez -- percussion Canefire premiered in Toronto in May '05, and has since performed at Harbourfront Centre, the Toronto Centre for the Arts, the Beaches International Jazz Festival, the Atlantic Jazz Festival, the St. John's Jazz Festival, the El Hatillo Jazz Festival (Venezuela), and the Trinidad and Tobago Steelpan and Jazz Festival. Canefire's debut album, 'Kaiso Blue', was recorded at CBC's Studio 211 in Toronto, and includes guest performances by Andy Narell and Venezuelan vocalist Eliana Cuevas .
