Product Notes

Creek River is a traditional string band with a decidedly untraditional approach to roots music that's both respectful and innovative. Taking their cues from bluegrass, country, Tex-Mex, Cajun, blues, Celtic, folk, jazz, classical, Old Timey, and a wide array of contemporary influences, Creek River puts their own high-energy spin on American roots music, with plenty of clever originals to keep the gumbo bubbling. These veterans of the Boston music scene never fail to delight and surprise. 'Folk melodies are the embodiment of an artistic perfection of the highest order; in fact, they are models of the way in which a musical idea can be expressed with utmost perfection in terms of brevity of form and simplicity of means.' -Bela Bartok THE PLAYERS Kim Patch, Roslindale, MA (fiddle): trained as a classical violinist and a veteran of many a chamber group and orchestra, Kim has shifted her passion to American roots music in recent years. Her formidable ability to sight-read and memorize complex melodies makes short work of exploring new music and sharing that encyclopedic knowledge with the rest of the band. Her fiddle defines the CRSB sound as much as anything, one moment digging into an old time fiddle rag and caressing a country waltz the next. Kim is one of three songwriters contributing material to our ever expanding repertoire. Eric Smalley, Roslindale, MA (bass, vocals): after playing electric bass for the requisite Dead and metal bands back in his college days, Eric has for many years now been honing his skills on the acoustic bass. His rock-solid timing is the pulse at the heart of Creek River's sound. Doug Turnbull, Providence, RI (mandolin, guitar, vocals): ever since Doug discovered his grandfather's mandolin in the attic he's been making those strings sing. He also adds guitar and vocals to the mix, along with his idiosyncratic songwriting. Doug brings to the band a love of sea shanties and drinking songs, the majority of which are unfortunately unsuitable for our family show. Jeremy Maciejewski, Roslindale, MA (banjo, guitar): sinking his picks into whatever the music demands, Jeremy's thoughtful approach to roots music defines the word "tasteful" (and on a banjo, no less!). Rags and bluegrass tunes will get you moving with Jeremy's banjo driving them forward. Jeremy also doubles handily on guitar. Stroker, Arlington, MA (accordion, vocals): What's that sound? Is it a pedal-steel guitar? A violin? A horn section? No! It's an accordion pushing musical boundaries. Playing with many other acts on the Boston scene today, Stroker introduces decades of influences as diverse as Zydeco, Zappa, Tex-Mex, classic jazz and R & B to the musical gumbo that is Creek River. Sharing songwriting duties with Doug and Kim, Stroker recently released a CD of 16 original compositions that include everything from jazz to hip-hop, and bluegrass to blues and back again. Stroker is the only member of the band to have ever been bit on the face by a raccoon (the attack was not in response to his accordion playing, all rumors to the contrary). Fred Kosak, Medord, MA (mandolin, guitar, vocals): Fred contributes years of deep immersion in bluegrass and country music. Not content to stop there, his musical tastes also run to West African kalimba ("thumb piano"), Radiohead, and Bazilian jazz. Never one to sit still, Fred's also into rock climbing and traveling to distant lands, where the music is exotic and the food tastes better than what he cooks at home.
