DREAM DANCING - DALE FIELDER LIVE @ LINCOLN PARK Dream Dancing - Dale Fielder Live @ Lincoln Park is a testament to the relevancy and healthy state of modern, straight-ahead jazz in the 21st Century. For his 15th CD release, Dale Fielder has come up with a swinging and engaging recording that is a rarity these days. In many ways, it is a throw-back to the pure and innocent days of jazz recording with labels like Soul Note and India-Navigation; recordings that were unapologetically all about artistic performance and personal expression. It was not odd for entire albums to have one or two compositions. Here, Fielder presents a concise program of 5 compositions, with not a one under 10 minutes long! At the same time this recording is reminiscent of the best live jazz recordings on labels like Blue Note or Riverside, where excellent recording quality captures a band on a good night before a live and engaging audience. The recording is also consistent with one of the tried and truest traditions in jazz: that of the traveling jazz artist performing with a "pick-up" band of the best local jazz artists. Where common knowledge of the bank of jazz standards, creates a common ground that makes such an impromptu meeting flow with ease. However consistent with Fielder's usual modus operandi, he does not choose the usual jazz standards. One of the characteristics that Fielder is known for throughout his career, is his choice of rare and obscure jazz standards. This CD opens with a bright, swinging up-tempo version of the rarely heard jazz standard Dream Dancing, which is the title track composed by the immortal Cole Porter. Here, Fielder displays his liquid soprano sax style in the tradition of Lucky Thompson, a major soprano influence. Throughout this CD, Fielder shares the major solo duties with legendary Pittsburgh guitarist Eric Johnson. Long known by jazz listeners in the know as one of the top guitarists in jazz, Johnson possesses impressive credentials: Jack McDuff, Sonny Fortune, Gene Ammons, Dexter Gordon, Ramsey Lewis, and Stanley Turrentine and is currently working with Lou Donaldson. The best example of the interplay between Fielder and Johnson comes on the composition, The Girl From East 9th Street, by the late Paul Desmond, alto saxophonist with the Dave Brubeck Quartet; -a track crying for airplay and should get it despite the 11:50 minute length! The other 3 tunes are Swingin' With C, a modal Fielder original, the Dexter Gordon arrangement of the standard Body And Soul and Wes Montgomery's Full House as the closer that features Johnson in all his glory. These are not your average, every-day jazz standards. Young Tim Jenkins acquits himself very well on his recording debut. A strong and melodic player, Fielder mentions in the liner notes that Jenkins is the latest in a continuum of Pittsburgh-style jazz pianists such as Earl Hines, Erroll Garner and Ahmad Jamal; -pianists who can both entertain as well as enlighten. Bassist Paul Thompson also shares the solo duties. He has worked with such jazz luminaries as Milt Jackson, George Benson, Dianne Schuur, Stanley Turrentine and Maynard Ferguson as musical director. Along with drummer Thomas Wendt, Thompson and Wendt are the current crop of first-call jazz musicians in Pittsburgh. Thomas Wendt is a prodigy who has been playing since the early age of 11. A student of Roger Humphries, Joe Harris and Kenny Washington, Wendt is currently an educator who has been working most recently with Sean Jones and the Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra. Wendt is also a composer who has won an Emmy for his soundtrack for the PBS documentary "Fly Boys". Dale Fielder is one of the true keepers-of-the-flame in jazz. He'll remind you of a Sonny Stitt both in the way he succeeds in putting together a pick-up band of musicians who never played together, yet performed an outstanding concert and live recording; as well as his authoritative playing on soprano, alto and tenor sax. He accomplished this through the strength and power of his personality. He is the real deal! If you are a lover of straight-ahead jazz, this is the album for you! It will restore your faith that "pure" jazz music is alive and well in 2014. This CD will remind you that there truly is something timeless, mystical and spiritual about jazz in how it continues to renew and rejuvenate the spirit of swing! This one's for you! -Reid Schultz.
