Product Notes

My musical influences include Simon and Garfunkel, Traditional Christian hymns, Rachmaninov (although I don't think that shines through too much on this album...), Bob Bennett, John Michael Talbot, and many more. 'We Lay Down Our Lives' was written as a call to worship that invites us to leave our troubles (which are many) at the door of the sanctuary so we can be free to lift up all we are to God so He is free to transform us step by step into the image of His Son, Jesus Christ. Ultimately, I hope that all of the songs on this album will help us in that process, whether it is through explicit worship, are through learning how to stick with a relationship, even in the tough times. The title 'Losers Walk, Winners Talk' comes from football games in my childhood. My buddies and I would gather in our backyards and play. After each touchdown, the team that scored would stay put, and the team scored against would have to walk to the other end of the field to receive the kick-off - often accompanied by taunts of 'Losers walk!' I wrote 'Let Your Kingdom Come' as I prepared to lead worship for a youth group meeting at which someone was to speak about human trafficking in Huntsville Alabama. I searched through several hymnals and found a song called 'O Holy City Seen of John' by Walter Bowie in 1909. I wrote a new melody, added the refrain line, 'O Lord, let your kingdom come (recalling a petition from the Lord's Prayer),' and added a refrain. The lyric provides a poignant reminder that our heavenly vision should inform our earthly vocation; which is to say, we who seek to follow Jesus need to be Kingdom Builders, and not our own kingdom! The most foundational place to be building the Kingdom is in our most intimate relationships. 'I Love to See You Smile' is dedicated to my lovely wife and best friend, Jodie. She has been a source of light and life to me for many years, and I pray, many more. 'Fill My Thoughts' is an adaptation of a hymn text called 'May the Mind of Christ My Savior' by Kate Barclay Wilkinson. Thanks to my daughter, Amy Castor for singing on this. Through all the music, and I would hope through all my life, there runs this firm conviction: There is nothing and nowhere that God is not present, walking with us through the toughest of times and the richest of joys. My hope is that you might sense His presence through this musical offering. Thanks, Dennis.
