Product Notes

When you hear Jeanette McKee's toasty-warm and lovely voice have it's way with the wonderful songs of 'Strictly Sentimental,' you'd swear you'd traveled back in time to the great jazz and pop singers like Rosemary Clooney, Dinah Shore or Margaret Whiting. Her wry, witty yet understated vocal style makes you long for the day when beautiful songs and singing were highly prized. Though she's a new artist, she won't be unknown for long! Treat yourself to a 'Strictly Sentimental' journey - a 'sentimental journey home.' Phil Hall, Broadway Music Director/Conductor/Composer Thanks, Phil Hall, for the lovely review! ***************** Here's what others are saying about Jeanette's singing - 'Her singing captures the spirit of the music' 'Beautifully sung' 'Poignant, real, and personal' 'Great phrasing and terrific diction' 'Beautifully expressive interpretations' 'Thoughtful and nostalgic' 'Fantastic' **************** What an amazing legacy I have been blessed with! Here is why - I guess some people might say I have lived a somewhat soulful life -- seldom seeking greener pastures or fulfilling grand ambitions. Life, for me, began in New York City, and continues here. A child of an interfaith marriage, I was shaped, in large measure, by the social, cultural and musical influences of my Italian heritage. There was mama who adored playing and singing the melodies of the 1930s and 1940s, a baritone uncle, his soprano-singing wife, and maternal grandparents who sang opera arias and Neopolitan songs. Father, too, was a lover of music, and played the piano by ear. The whole family was immersed in music making. For all of us, music was life, and life was music! My joy, as a child, was doing ballet and tap, which lead me, along with several other five year olds, to Carnegie Hall. I still get goose bumps thinking about dancing on that grand stage! Another musical pastime I adored was choosing songs I loved and playing them by ear on our upright. As an adolescent, it was a great way of navigating the social and emotional challenges of my teen years, and family drama. I also spent many hours 'playing' American popular songs from mama's songbooks. To play the left hand, I taught myself how to apply the guitar chords noted on the sheet music. Since life has a way of diverting us from our dreams, years of full-time work, academic study, and then more full-time work, passed before I was able to give music the time it deserved. Sadly, and ironically, it was mama's declining health that brought me out of the shadows, and gently guided me back to music. Those daily visits to her in the nursing home changed my life! Hoping to hear mama sing, again, I brought her songbooks to the Home. They were the very same ones I played as a young girl - the ones filled with Porter, Gershwin, Berlin, among others. After mama left us, and to keep her memory alive, I began taking vocal lessons, exploring the keyboard, and composing a small collection of neoclassical melodies. A new world was opening it's doors to me! It's the best thing that EVER happened to me (so far)! Looking back, it's hard to imagine how I ever lived without the constancy of music. It was like living without a loved one or a best friend. Through mama and her love of song, I am learning to be true to myself musically, and to sing the music I love with all my heart. She is the inspiration for it all. A new artist by most standards, my performances include Cleopatra's Needle in New York City, (open mic), Symphony Space - Barthalia (open mic), and several performances with The PhilHallmonic Society, a non-profit organization of cabaret and classical singers who contribute their talents to support philanthropic causes. These women sing their hearts out to remind audiences that it is NEVER TOO LATE to follow your passion. A message that truly resonates with me! Happy listening!
