Product Notes

'Dirty Swing' is a collaboration between guitarist, Jonny Hepbir and accordionist, Dan Teper. The album came about initially as an idea Jonny had to create an album with a different take on classic Gypsy Jazz themes, arranged for guitar and accordion. Dan was the obvious choice to approach for a project of such absurdity, and after some mild stalking and phone harrassment, he agreed to participate in some dirty swing. The album is a combustion of spontaneity, humour, passion, good ideas, strange ideas and great musicianship. A bit about the artists: Jonny has been working as a professional guitarist for over twenty years. After early success with Flamenco-jazz albums, which led to tours and concerts in theatres and festivals, as well as television and radio work, Jonny made a decision to re-learn guitar technique and began studying the Django Reinhardt/gypsy way of playing. Over the years, he has travelled through Europe to meet, play and learn from some of the gypsy grand-masters, including Bireli Lagrene, Lulu Reinhardt, Stochelo Rosenberg, Paulus Schäfer, Fiegeli Prisor, Angelo Debarre, Rino van Hooijdonk and countless other fantastic players. He has also appeared at the 2003 International Jazz Guitar Festival in Wrexham as a member of the Bireli Lagrene Quintette. Performances at all three legendary L'esprit Manouche Festivals in Birmingham '03,'04,'05, The International Gypsy Guitar Festival in Gloucestershire '02, '04, '06, '08, Beachdown Festival Brighton '08, Birmingham International Jazz and Blues Festival and the 34th Festival Django Reinhardt 2013 in Samois-sur-Seine, France. In 2002 he released an album of gypsy-style originals released on U.S.A label, Refined Records. (U.K - 'Grand Bizarre', U.S.A - 'Turkish Blend'). He has had the pleasure of working with some superb musicians such as violinists Andy Aitchison, Mike Piggott, Tim Kliphuis, Steve Elsworth and Christian Garrick. Guitarists Mundel Lowe, John Etheridge and Robin Nolan. Also, multi-instrumentalist composer/arranger, Charlotte Glasson. 'GUITAR' magazine describes Jonny as 'the English virtuoso'. And Swedish guitar wizard Andreas Oberg said 'Since my first encounter with Jonny Hepbir at the 'L Esprit Manouche Festival 2003', I've been impressed by his technique and authentic gypsy sound. Jonny has performed with many of the great guitarists in the style and he's been a leading player on the UK gypsy jazz scene for years' Currently, he is concentrating on working with his Gypsy Swing trio and quartet, who have performed for the likes of Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Terence Conran, Roman Abramovich and played venues as far-flung as Morocco and the Isle of Sark. Dan Teper studied music at Berklee, USA where he specialised in film scoring, jazz piano and folk accordion. A multi-instrumentalist (and awful singer), he has been writing music for film and television full time since 2000. His credits comprise numerous films, documentaries, docu-dramas, reality TV series and cinematic shorts including the BAFTA nominated 'Nits' in 2004 and the multi-award winning US feature 'In Memory of My Father' in 2005. He has scored three other feature films including Samuelson Productions' 'Things to do Before You're 30' starring Dougray Scott, Amelia Fox, Billie Piper and Jimi Mistry. Dan's work for the advertising industry includes music for Peugeot, Kelloggs, Vision Express, Jamie Oliver, Halls, BBC3 Comedy, Snack-a-Jacks and Egg Bank. He has written music for shows for all the major UK television networks, as well as some of the more dodgy minor ones. His KPM albums "CheeseCore" (2001), Imagination (2007) and CheeseCore Deluxe (2008) have enjoyed phenomenal worldwide success and have been used in hundreds of shows from Coast (BBC) to Only Fools & Horses (BBC) to Bo! Selecta (C4) to Oprah Winfrey (US). As a musician he has toured extensively across Europe and beyond and has performed for the British Royal Family on more than one occasion as well as for Gordon Brown and The Cheeky Girls (on separate occasions). Dan works from his own fully equipped studio in bohemian South-East London where he cowers beneath huge piles of exotic accordions and vintage synthesizers. He is a keen footballer, but is learning that other things in life, apart from football, can be interesting too. Although rarely more so than football itself.
