Product Notes

Aptly named, Lonesome Steve Fowler's TOMFOOLERY is a genuine romp through, well, well . . . A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, Steve (all by his lonesome self), mesmerized by the siren calls of John Prine and Loudon Wainwright, III, could not contain himself and followed the pair down Alice's hole ("We're all mad here!") and wound up somewhere in Harlan County, Kentucky, face to face with Mags Bennett and Ava Crowder (Pass the Apple Pie, you whore!). In other words, Lonesome Steve offers songs Elmore Leonard would love to have written. While rolling around in gritty realism, this song collection oozes with eloquent storytelling amidst "foolish" behavior. It reflects real life. Well, real life, that is, for the down-and-out, the strugglers. TOMFOOLERY begins after all with "My C-Section Scar" where "I'm looking for a lady with a big black eye" and moves along toward "Used Carlotta": "She says she's low mileage, but I think she's been rolled over." And onward with the visions in "Curl My Hair": "She can praise the Lord and curse the weather out of both sides of her mouth." And all to the sweet twang of bluesy or western guitars and the gnawing undercurrent of the occasional harmonica. TOMFOOLERY is what you want to have on hand for the bad days because foolish trifling with your brain (and mood) is not an idle promise. Steve Fowler, for all his lonesomeness, stands and delivers. In spades! Particular standouts are "Thanksgiving with a Prostitute" and "Whiskey Maker's Daughter." Extra props for Kayla Rivera Smith's background and duet vocals. She echoes folksinger Iris DeMent in her easy yet intense style. All in all, TOMFOOLERY is one terrific collection of . . . of . . . well, we're back staring down that hole again, so why not jump on in! "Today we'll find something to be thankful for . . ."
