Product Notes

The vielle, a 3 to 5 string flatback fiddle, most likely had it's origins in Asia and traveled westward, reaching Europe in the Middle Ages. It's expressive voice gained it widespread popularity that lasted centuries before the louder, brighter, violin appeared on the scene. Gradually the vielle was put aside and forgotten until all that remained was an image, a silent decoration on churches and in illuminated manuscripts. More centuries passed; the art of composition flourished, orchestras grew to grand proportions, electronic music was born. And then, with curious instrument makers and musicians looking back to the past to find fresh sounds and inspiration, the vielle was brought back to life. Though it's still relatively rare, you will occasionally see it being played, mostly in historical settings accompanying singers and playing a small surviving repertoire of medieval dance tunes. In this recording Ruthie Dornfeld sets out to gently welcome the vielle to the twenty first century. She takes inspiration from medieval and folk music, but also from simply imagining the instrument's path westward, and the leap across time it has made. So, here is an offering of new music for an old instrument. May the vielle continue to sing!
