Product Notes

Sofia Ribeiro is one of the greatest voices from the country of fado, a magnificent singer who has the ability to immediately attract the listener to her unique musical universe. With a solid background in jazz studies, a very deep connection to Portuguese traditional music, and endless hours of listening to Brazilian legendary musicians, Sofia's artistry challenges the boundaries of music labels. Well-known for her strong and emotional performances, the multi-awarded singer has captivated audiences all over the world with her warm and charming sound. Blending elements of jazz, pop, Brazilian and Portuguese music, the new album 'Ar' is the result of the powerful combination of this exceptional singer's talent as a vocalist and composer with the brilliant arrangements and production of Colombian pianist Juan Andre´s Ospina. Including several original compositions, two songs by Brazilian musicians and two adaptations of poems by renowned Portuguese writers, "Ar" is a journey where emotions, images and poetry interact through Sofia's splendid voice and a superb ensemble of international top musicians living in New York. THE BAND: Sofia Ribeiro (Portugal) - voice Juan Andrés Ospina (Colombia) - piano Petros Klamplanis (Greece) - doublebass Marcelo Woloski (Argentina) - percussion Magda Giannikou (Greece) - accordion on 'Súplica', 'No ar' and 'Adversidade' Greg Ruggiero (U.S.A.) - guitar on 'Bola de chumbo', 'Ribalta' and 'Os teus olhos' String Quartet in "Ribalta": Megan Gould, violin I Rebecca Cherry, violin II Lev 'Ljova' Zhurbin, viola Yoed Nir, cello PRESS (selection): "Sofia is an exceptionally talented musician who is stylistically diverse and technically proficient, with a remarkable ear and articulation technique. Her stylistic interpretation is seasoned, sophisticated and extremely expressive. She is one of the best scat singers that I have ever worked with!" (Bob Stoloff, Berklee College of Music, U.S.A) "Her annunciation is pure no matter if the volume she sings at is sometimes barely above a whisper. And when she has the freedom to improvise or sing a cadenza, her lines lope and spiral making the song look like a bird in tumbling flight." (Raul da Gama, The World Music Report) "And besides her glamorous voice and perfect intonation, Sofia Ribeiro's delicate singing full of nuances and different timbres created fragile and emotional moments and atmospheres. (...) Fantastic!" (Trierischer Volksfreund Magazine, Germany) "Sofia Ribeiro, with easiness and naturalness, releases a crystalline, precise and light voice, that, once in a while, she even uses as a trumpet, trombone or brushes in a snare drum. (...) Her irreproachable method comes close to perfection." (Daniel Kirchner, Jazz-Rhone-Alpes, France) 'Sofia seems to infuse the lyrics with emotion and soul and not simply sing the melodies, and this makes all the difference." (Leonel Santos) BIO: With over five albums as a leader, Sofia has been touring all over the world for the past years and collaborating with top musicians from Europe and New York. She has won several international vocal prizes, such as the vocal jazz competitions "Voicingers" (Poland, 2008) and the "Crest Jazz Vocal" (France, 2010) and the second prize at the Brussels "Young Jazz Singers" competition (Belgium, 2005). In 2008 she was selected to participate at the prestigious "Betty Carter Jazz Ahead" program at the Kennedy Center (Washington, DC). She has also been teaching workshops internationally, having been invited as a guest teacher in Universities in Poland, France, Spain, Colombia and Portugal. Sofia has a degree in Jazz Performance from the Escola Superior de Mu´sica e Artes do Especta´culo do Porto (Portugal) where she studied with the renowned Portuguese singer Maria Joa~o and the Dutch jazz vocalist Fay Claassen. During her studies she did a one-year exchange program in Barcelona at the Escola Superior de Mu´sica de Catalunya (Barcelona, Spain), and another one at the prestigious Berklee College of Music (Boston, US), which she did through an international scholarship. At Berklee she studied with the famous jazz coach Bob Stoloff, and was awarded with the "Oliver Wagmann Memorial Scholarship". Later on she was selected to a masters program at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels (Belgium), where she studied with the Belgian jazz singer David Linx. Through an 'Erasmus' scholarship she took the second year of her masters program at the legendary Conservatoire National Superieur de Paris (France), and graduated with 'Honors'.
